The Old Bag of Nails Pub. Mason, OH.

5234 Kings Mills Road

Price for a Guinness: $6.50 | Overall Rating: 6.05

Let the truth be told... this pub is part of a decent sized chain in the Ohio area. This is not a stand alone Mom n' Pop. However, that doesn't mean it's not worthy of a visit from time to time! Especially if there's Craic to be found... which at this particular location; not so much.

The exterior of the place isn't one to write home about as it sits in an outdated shopping plaza. Although the architecture on the inside is rather splendid. There are nice stones and an interesting layout once you walk through the door. The bar itself is a large horseshoe that holds a mere 30 or so patrons with TVs everywhere you look for gameday.

The bartender was a friendly one and served me an above average pour of Guinness that ran me $6.50. They do not offer Paddy's unfortunately, however, their whiskey selection is better than one might expect out of a chain. I noticed that they have very good happy hour deals for those who like to drink and consume light snacks while the sun is still shining. Although, I did not write any of the deals down so you'll just have to take my word for it.

The bathrooms as well as the entire place were well kept and tidy while the employees seemed happy all around. There's a jukebox for the music lovers and TVs inside each of the booths for the video lovers. A few gripes that I ran across were the plethora of bare walls without any decor. Don't get me wrong, some of the decor that's on display is rather neat and unique, but the amount of decor does not compete with the amount of square footage. The interior has a bit of a cold atmosphere that doesn't provide much Craic that all Irish Pub enthusiasts crave.

At the end of the day, you do end up feeling like you're in a cookie cutter chain. The menus are mass produced, the patrons/demographics are all over the place, and you can tell that each employee surely goes through one of those cheesy "Bag of Nails University" training videos before starting "on the floor" as every chain restaurunt in America seems to have. Don't cancel any plans to drive over here, but if you happen to be shopping nearby during Happy Hour then I'd say come in for a quick pint before heading home. Other than that, you're better off just sticking to your day plans.

Slainte!
