Holy Ground Irish Pub. New Orleans, Louisiana.

3340 Canal Street

Guinness Tag: $6.00 | Overall Rating: 6.65

Today's Dedicated Pint: Jenny Blair. The Carolinas.

Resting inside the colorful Mid-City of New Orleans, The Holy Ground provides patrons with a laid-back spot for throwing darts and shooting pool. The ambience is incredibly chill with immaculately dim lighting. If there's anything The Drunken Mallard loves most about an Irish Pub; it's normally the lighting of the place. Natural light is typically fine and dandy, however, if you can master a dim atmosphere on the inside that makes you feel blinded by the light when exiting the door then you're doing something right. The Holy Ground isn't at the top of the chain when it comes to that, though... It's just up there.

The Mid-City area isn't too saturated with Irish Pubs, however, the two Pubs that do reside here happen to be rather close to each other. The Holy Ground lays just a few blocks away from Finn McCool's; one of the best Irish Pubs in Louisiana. If you happen to be visiting here right after Finn McCool's then your experience may feel a little deflating. It's got a very large and open layout that allows the place to get rather crowded without feeling overwhelmed. There are plenty of dartboards and pool tables to satisfy the athletes and there are a few slot machines to occupy the dreamers.

The overall vibe of the place has a dark and rather punk feel. The music here is typically set to older punk rock and you are surrounded by dim green lighting with darkly shaded walls. The curb appeal is perhaps a little more inviting than the interior. The prices are splendid; giving guests a Tall Boy and Tully shot for $6.50 in exchange.

The Guinness pours come in at $6.00 and they're mighty poor. The bartender(s) can give off the ditzy and "whatever" impression and the locals fit the description of "let's come in, have a few shots, smoke a pack, and forget about life for a while". Most people are not going to want to take their mother-in-law here for a lovely chat once the sun goes down. There's a bit of "lack-age on the Craic-age".

Both the draft beer and whiskey selections are fantastic though, leaving those looking to venture out from the same-old, boring "go-to's" of Jack, Jim, and Bud. Their most popular drink is the Green Mimosa. Behind the bar you'll find a large assortment of old-school nicknacks and movie kickbacks like Gremlins and Barbies which gives the place a certain type of uniqueness. There are a couple of TVs for getting your "The Price is Right" fix and the bathrooms come with a great amount of grunge and stank.

Overall, the Holy Ground will wet your whistle and allow you to beat your friends in some darts. It's not going to blow you away with anything and it's not a place that you're going to want to cancel any day-plans for. It's not highly recommended and to be frank; it's just another place for the middle to lower class to get hammered in.

Let's hope for a better pour through the next door!
