Don't let the low score fool ya; this Irish Pub is a flippin' BLAST. If you're from out of town and stumbling down the road you'd look at the front door of this place and say "heck yeah, let's give this Irish Pub a try" (rightfully so). If you're a straight guy like me, you'd walk in, get immediately judged by everyone in the room, sit down, and realize "oh, this is 100% a gay bar". One of the things that I love about Cavan's the most is that they seem to market themselves as an Irish Pub first and as a gay bar second. Normally it's the other way around, and quite frankly; I've been to a handful of gay-bars in my time although I can't say I've been to a gay-Irish-pub until now.
After about 5 minutes you'll realize that the Irish culture quickly dissipates and you are ensconced with "gay". If you're an Irish Pub enthusiast and a craic addict then Cavan's won't be tickling your fancy. If you're someone who likes to have a great time then Cavan's will be tickling a little more than just your fancy. Cavan's is a drag bar as well. Every week they offer drag shows and karaoke for the locals and we were lucky to catch them both.
Out of respect for the individuals we will not be posting any pictures of anyone on stage (or anyone for that matter). We did come across some fun advertisements on their social media for you to get the gist.
Being that it's an Irish Pub they do offer Guinness and it's even on tap. I was handed a decent pour, however, they serve their Guinness in the 16oz miniature pints so that's a bit of a stinker. You'll come across many light beer and house liquor sippers here. Shooters are quite popular with the locals here as well.
The soft tip dart board is actually extremely popular. If you want to play all evening, then you'll probably need to keep winning. Believe it or not; they do have a few steel tip dart boards on the wall, however, they are hanging for decoration as they are essentially unplayable. They aren't placed at regulation height and they are hung in spots where nobody is going to be lining up for a steel tip throw. But hey; they do have steel tip dart boards so you gotta respect it.
Cavan's has established themselves well with the community throughout the years and they attract people of all backgrounds. Expect to see large crowds of many diverse groups on Friday and Saturday nights.
You won't be grabbing any bites to eat and your whiskey selection is limited when it comes to the high-end stuff. The bar itself is a large horseshoe style bar surrounded by high top tables, making for easy conversation with the slight swivel of the head. Some of the furnishings and decor is a little jank... but that's kind of the schtick. When the sun goes down and the place isn't jam packed it does provide a rather cozy atmosphere. Is this a "go to" spot for Irish Pub enthusiasts? Absolutely not. Is this a great place to unwind and have a fantastic time? Hell yeah.
